De-essing a vocal track

- [Narrator] A specialized version of a multi-band compressor is called a De-essor. Like any multi-band compressor, a De-essor is able to focus on specific areas of the frequency range, in this case the high frequencies, and apply large amounts of compression to that range only, while leaving the other frequencies untouched. Sibilance in voice is the sound of S's and T syllables being over-emphasized in a recording. Different voices might have more sibilance, and different mics also might bring out more sibilance. These problematic frequencies range around 5-8 kilohertz in a female voice and 3-6 kilohertz in a male voice. If we use a De-essor like the stock Logic one, let me insert it into the vocal track. I'm going to insert it after our EQs and compression. Go ahead and under the dynamics, we see the De-essor. The stock Logic De-essor allows us to compress only the high frequency ranges when they occur, and it leaves other frequency areas alone, effectively reducing the sibilance in…
