Balancing the mix
Once you've decided on your mix approach and you're ready to dive in, one of the first things you'll want to do is get a decently balanced static mix. In other words, you want to get all the levels of the instruments generally in the right place so that no one element is sticking out too much in the mix, or is too quiet in the mix. If you've decided to start by dialing in the vocal sound and building around it, you can balance the mix beforehand and then come back to rebalance after you get your vocal sound dialed in. Or you can dial in the vocal and then balance the mix around it. At the end of this chapter, once we've covered equalization, compression, effects, and some other essential mixing tools and techniques, we'll get hands-on and dial-in a vocal or two. For now, let's pretend we've already dialed in the vocal a bit, and do some balancing. Since it's so quiet in this song, if you're working in say something, that is. Let's bump the volume slider up.
