- [Instructor] Emacs is a popular text editor that's available on many platforms including nearly all Linux distros. While Emacs can be pretty intimidating to new users, the powerful features that it offers make it a favorite of many Power users. Let's take a look at the basics of using Emacs. To launch Emacs with the command line you can type emacs. And if you don't have it installed you can get it from your distros package manager. If you just write emacs like this, and you're using a graphical or desktop environment, you'll see a graphical version of Emacs. And while that can be nice to explore, we'll focus on the terminal version of Emacs in this episode. To do that I'll use the no window option with emacs -nw. When Emacs first opens you'll see a help screen with a few tips for new users. An important thing I want to point out here is the convention for writing out key combinations.
