Why multiple package formats?
- [Instructor] You may be wondering why there are multiple software package formats that do the same thing. There are philosophical differences between Debian and Red Hat Packages. The philosophy for Red Hat Packages is that they're for installing software only. As such, they don't autoconfigure software. The system configuration is left up to the user, and the package usually includes configuration file templates. They also don't autostart services. If a user wants a service running, they can start it themselves. RPM Packages don't support prompting the user. The RPM Package maintainers believe that, if there is license information to be accepted, that should be handled before installing the software, not during. Debian Packages are designed to set up everything for you. This means that if the package includes a service, it will configure it for you. It will also start the service.
