- [Instructor] Before we get started, let's go over a few assumptions about the background knowledge needed to get the most out of this course. First, we will be using the UNIX command line extensively in this course to install, configure, and run applications. Accordingly, comfort with the command line is required. Also, we will set up and familiarize ourselves with the Graphite and Grafana open-source monitoring stack and explore the features and capabilities of these tools using Docker, so having an up-to-date version of this software installed on your machine is also a requirement. Additionally we will be utilizing an Ubuntu 16.04 virtual machine to install and configure these systems, as this environment provides a more realistic picture of production-like setups. Therefore, if your host machine is a Mac or PC, a basic understanding of how to use desktop virtualization software, such as VirtualBox or VMware is also mandatory. Lastly, a working knowledge of Python is useful but not required, as we will use it to create a small script that we will then run sporadically throughout the course.
