What is MariaDB?

- [Instructor] For many years, the most popular relational database in the world was MySQL, which was bought by Sun Microsystems in 2008. Two years later, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems. This concerned some of the original developers of MySQL due to Oracle being a large closed source database company. The company that created the InnoDB database storage engine used by MySQL was also acquired by Oracle. The day that Oracle purchased MySQL, the code was forked into MariaDB by one of its founding developers. MariaDB version numbers and their relation to MySQL version numbers can be confusing. MariaDB versions 5.1 through 5.3 were based on the MySQL 5.1 code base. MySQL 5.5 came out after Oracle purchased Sun Microsystems and MariaDB changed its numbering scheme starting with version 10 as it was no longer directly based on the MYSQL code.
