From the course: Linux: Package Management for CentOS
Use graphical package tools
- Managing packages from the command line is faster and more powerful than using a gui tool. However, there may be times where you just want to bring up a gui interface, search for a package, and click install. We have two choices for gui package management tools. The built-in application installer and the third party yumex program. Let's start with the application installer. Go to applications, system tools, application installer. As soon as this starts up we have to click on let's go shopping. Now type in "gimp" in the search box and hit enter. Now click on the install button and watch the button slowly turn blue as our package installs. Often you'll watch it sit and do nothing until you are certain it is broken. The problem is you don't get a lot of feedback in what it's doing. The network could be timing out. It could be package problems, but all you see is a little progress bar in the button. If it fails, it will tell you that it failed, but not why. Now click on close and click…
