RPM has the ability to update packages in multiple ways. It can update or freshen packages. When updating, the package will be upgraded if it's already installed or installed if it isn't. Using the freshen option will only update it if it's already installed. If it's not, then it will be ignored. Working through some of the dependency problems and conflicts is a manual process with RPM.
