- [Instructor] Name-based virtual hosts allow us to run more than one website from a single server. These sites could be separate domains entirely, like example.com and example.biz, or they could be subdomains of the same domain, like mail.example.com and admin.example.com. In fact, this is how shared web hosting operates, often running hundreds or thousands of separate websites from the same server. If you're using virtual hosts on an internet-facing machine, you'll need to have the domain records in place to support it. You'll need to have registered domains at a registrar and configured your records to point to the IP address of your server. Just telling a server that it has a particular domain name in the Apache configuration isn't enough to actually have it respond at that address on the internet.
