Selecting an antenna for wireless network testing
- A wireless network depends upon its ability to reliably send and receive wireless packets, and it does that through its antenna system. A router will typically have at least one external antenna. The NETGEAR device shown here has three external antennas. Laptop, on the other hand, have their antenna looped around the inside of the case. When testing wireless networks from your laptop, your wireless scanner will cycle through the set of wireless channels to detect all networks in range. This will have the effect of disconnecting your Internet connection, as this is fixed on one channel. Consequently, it's useful to have a separate wireless antenna. Wireless testing from the virtual box environment, is a special case which requires an external antenna, because the virtualized ethernet LAN to which VMs attach is using the wireless connection, so again an external antenna is required.
