Red Hat software package format

- Most Linux distributions utilize either Debian packages or RPM packages. For this course we're using CentOS Linux which uses RPM format, and as such the rest of this course will focus on RPM packages. The RPM format was created by Red Hat in 1996. Red Hat created the RPM format from a previous tool called PM or Package Manager. RPM packages use the .rpm file extension. RPMs are very similar to Debian packages, as they are archives that contain binary programs, data files such as documentation, configuration data, and even graphic data such as icons. They also include metadata about the package and its contents. Lastly, they include scripts to execute before and after installation. The metadata is data about the package and its contents. It will include the package name, the version number of the software held within the package, and the release number of the package. This number signifies the number of times the package has been built; it doesn't reflect the version of software…
