RPM overview: Linux: Package Management for CentOS

RPM is the package management format used on Red Hat based Linux systems. RPM has the ability to download packages from the Internet, but no concept of repositories, so it can't resolve dependencies. RPM manages installing software that's been downloaded to the disk. Yum is mostly used to install packages from repositories.
