- [Scott] These three protocols are the ones you're likely to need if you're starting to work with file sharing on Linux. If you're setting up a file sharing solution, it's important to consider the security and accessibility needs for your environment. If you're sharing files with outside people, FTP is a good bet. If you're providing resources on a home network or a corporate network to end users, CIFS is probably what you'd want to use. And if you're setting up connections between servers on the same network, NFS is probably for you. I encourage you to set up some different scenarios with each of the different protocols and see how they behave. Each of these protocols have a whole bunch of configuration options and optimizations, so dig into the man pages for each of them and find out more. Good luck on your Linux learning journey.
