- [Instructor] In the late 1990s, we thought we would be transitioning to IP version six as it had become a draft standard. It remained a draft standard for nearly 20 years and only as of 2017 became a full standard. The world is still mostly running on IP version four. One of the issues with IP version four is that it has a limited number of possible IP addresses. Although 4.3 billion seems like a lot, we probably exhausted that a long time ago. Most internal networks use network address translation to make one public IP address appear as many, possibly thousands. This has gotten us by so far. However, IP version six has many advantages, including 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses. That's not really a number but the real number of 340 undecillion may not mean a lot to anyone.
