Explore hard disk and SSD considerations.
- [Instructor] We usually use the word…hard disk or hard drive…to indicate a storage device that has a spinning disk.…Disks that spin mean that the data in the disk…can only be read when the head…is over that part of the disk.…So, the spinning disk latency varies…based on the position of the head.…Hard disks tend to have a longer life,…or wear longer than SSDs,…so that's a consideration.…But our disks tend to be less expensive per unit of storage…as SSSDs.…
SSDs, solid state drive,…is a device that looks like a disk,…but it uses solid state memory devices, chips,…instead of spinning disks.…An SSD is a device that is plug compatible with a hard disk.…You can plug it in with the same interface or cable…as a hard disk,…like a SATA interface.…There's also PCI card devices that act like disks.…An SSD typically has much faster read performance…than a hard disk.…
An SSDs write performance,…and hard disks write performance…might be a good bit slower than its read performance.…With the lesser lifetime of an SSD,…that means you can wear it out faster.…
