- [Instructor] This section will provide an overview of the Graphite open source monitoring tool. We'll go over what Graphite can and can't do as well as outline the three basic components of Graphite. This will provide the foundation of understanding needed to configure and operate Graphite. Graphite does two things. One, its stores numerical time-series data. For example, if you have an application that collects the number of emails sent over time and you want to store that data, Graphite can help. Two, it provides the ability to graph this data in real time. It does not collect the data it stores for you so it must be used with a stats collector such as StatsD, which was covered in the previous section. Graphite itself is three separate components that work together to enable real time graphing capabilities in a fault-tolerant, time-series data storage system. One, Carbon.
