- [Instructor] Now that we have MATE desktop installed, let's get to know it. The first thing that you may notice is that MATE is much simpler desktop than GNOME three or KDE. There's a top panel with an application menu containing easy to use categories of applications. Next to it is the Places menu, which has menu items for folders and drives in the system, as well as network drives in a search tool. The next menu over is the System menu, where you'll find menu items to start each individual program for configuring the system. This is in contrast to the unified systems setting programs in GNOME three and KDE. Let's start learning our way around the system menu by choosing System, Control Center. The control center is a launcher application that starts other individual configuration tools. In MATE, each configuration item has a separate program.
