- [Instructor] With Linux, the GUI is just another set of running programs. This means you can switch between GUI or desktop environment as you wish. There are many different desktop environments in Linux. Red Hat historically used a GNOME 2 desktop. GNOME is pronounced guh nome, just as GNU is pronounced guh new. GNOME is part of the GNU project. GNOME 2 was a fairly traditional desktop which was basic and easy to use. A couple of years ago, the GNOME project stopped supporting GNOME 2 and replaced it with the GNOME 3, which is a paradigm shift in desktop workflow. GNOME 3 doesn't even have an application menu by default. You can visit the gnome.org/gnome-3 website to learn more about GNOME 3. There were enough people that missed GNOME 2 that the project was forked into the MATE desktop environment. You can learn about that as well at mate-desktop.com.
