Debian software package format
- There are many software package formats for Linux. But the majority of Linux distributions use either Debian or RPM format. Let's talk about the Debian Package Format for a moment. The Debian Package Format was created by the Debian software distribution in the early 90s. The Debian Package format makes installing the software easy. Before it was created, the user had to install software by compiling source code. Debian package files are named with a dot deb extension. A Debian package is an archive that contains the following: Binary files that may include compiled programs, data files, such as configuration files, and graphic data. Metadata about the package, and scripts to run during installation and uninstallation. The metadata would include the package name, the version number, processor architecture that it was compiled for, the package maintainer's name and contact information, the package dependencies, which would be the packages that it requires, what the package provides…
