- When we think about the status of a disk, there's two components to consider. There's the logical component, the file system, and the physical component, the hardware of the disk itself. In this video, we'll take a look at how to check out the physical aspect of a disk. And in the next chapter, we'll take take a look at the file system component. There's a system called SMART, which keeps an eye on disks, and gives us some information about errors, and whether a disk is likely to fail soon. SMART stands for self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology. And it keeps track of the general physical health of the drive. It doesn't care about the files or partitions, it's concerned with how the drive's software and hardware are able to read data off the device, whatever data that may be. At the command line, we can use the SMART CTL software to take a look at the SMART status of a disk, and see some other information as well. To take a look at my local disk here on this virtual…
