Walk through the set up process for a new LinkedIn account, and verify your account.
- [Instructor] In this video we'll take a look at how to set up a new Linked In profile from the perspective of a student. In order to demonstrate this, through out this course I'll be setting up an account for Zachary Heilyn, who's a junior studying marketing at Orange Valley University. First you can begin signing up for an account by navigating to LinkedIn.com. Now keep in mind that the look and layout of this sign up page may change but the process for signing up will be the same. So these fields here are pretty intuitive. I'm going to go ahead and type in Zach's first name and last name.
I'll type in his email address and then create a password. I'll go ahead and do that. Now I suggest creating a quality password for your account since you'll be sharing very personal information inside of your profile. You should create a password with 10 or more characters including upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters, for example a punctuation mark. Now make sure however that if you create a new password remember it. And if you write it down, store it in a private and secure place.
Finally once I have these fields in here I'm going to go to the bottom and click on join now. And it now asks us the country we live in and in this case it is United States. And then I'm going to type in the zip code. I'll hit next. And it's going to ask whether or not we're a student so I'm going to click yes here. And when you do this they'll being customizing your account. So first I'm going to type in the university that I attend. And in this case it is Orange Valley University.
Start year, in this case for Zach he started in 2015 and is going to graduate in 2020. And then it's asking if you're over 18, in this case Zach is so I'm going to click next. Linked In will then ask what you're most interested in doing. So are you signing up for an account because you're finding a job, staying up to date with your industry, keeping in touch with contacts, building a professional network or not sure yet I'm open. I like to click the bottom one here because really I would use your linked In account for all of these options.
And next you need to confirm your email. So this is where Linked In will send you an email that has a verification code inside of it just to ensure that you really are signing up for an account. So I'm going to switch over to a new tab here and you'll notice that I received a message under Zach's account from Linked In and when I open it up it gives us this code of 420208. I'm going to go in here and type in 420208 and then click verify. It tells us that our account is verified and next it says every career needs a strong network, you can build yours by entering in your email address.
So if you decide to do this and click on continue they'll import your address book so that you can suggest connections from people that you're connected with through your email. In this case I'm going to skip this step. Linked In will then recommend some people that you may want to connect with based on what you entered into your account so far. Now they're only giving me one person and that's because they are from Orange Valley University however depending on what you've entered in, you may have more here. And if you decide to you can keep this checked and then click on add those connections or you can uncheck any of the members that you want and add the ones that you would like to.
In this case I'm not going to add anyone here so I'll click skip. And this is the first opportunity to add a photo, something I recommend you do but this is something I'm going to do in another video so for right now again I'll skip this step. And then Linked In asks if you want to get the app. Linked In does have an excellent mobile app available on the IOS app store as well as Google Play. So if you want to get the app you can do that right away by putting in your country and your phone number and then they will send you a text message that allows you to download the app from right there.
I'm going to go ahead and click next. So this now brings us to our account. Our account is officially created but it's far from complete. Through out the rest of this chapter we'll take a look at how we can customize our profile in order to make sure that it stands out and helps you accomplish your goals.
