- Once you've created your new LinkedIn profile one of my first suggestions to new users is that they go in and lock down all of their privacy settings right off the bat. This is very important and it helps you really understand exactly what level of access people have to the information that you post on sites like this. First off let's go up here to this little icon where you see my little user face right there, and what we're going to do is we're going to go down to where it says Privacy & Settings, and I'm just going to click on Manage. That's going to take me into this section, it's going to put a banner up at the top that says, don't get locked out of your account.
Please add another email to make sure you can always sign in and reset your password. What this means is basically if you are somehow locked out of your account, and you don't have access to the email address that they have on file for you they can put an additional email address on file so that you have easy access to it. In this case, I'm just going to click this little X icon right here on the right, and that's going to get rid of that. You can add that in later, and I recommend that you do so, but you don't necessarily have to do that. Now, here is your basic overview of your account. Right now you're inside of the profile section, and so you can see here at the top, you can see when you became a member, you can also change your password, you can also add or change your primary email address, you can add phone numbers, you can view your purchase history so if you've upgraded to a premium account you can see that, and one of the most important things you can view your active sessions.
If something fishy ever happens with your LinkedIn account where you think somebody might have access to it that doesn't need to, you can go and see where you're signed in using this service right here, and so when you click on this it's actually going to show you where you are anywhere in the world, and if you're signed in or not. If you see something like this that is not what you think needs to be here then you can certainly log out of everything. You can change your password, you can view your list of authorized apps, you can go in all of these different places, and make sure that everything is locked down.
That's very important, so if you see something a little bit unusual happening with your account this is where you go to manage that. Now to get back to the previous screen just go right back up here, go to Privacy & Settings and click Manage. Again, it's going to come up with this banner you can remove that from right there. Down at the bottom you have various Privacy Controls, so you can turn on and off things like your activity broadcast, select who can see your activity feed, select what others see when they view your profile, turn on and off how you rank, select how you see your connections, choose who can follow your updates, etcetera.
This is all totally up to you, and I recommend that you go through each one of these settings so that you can fine tune your privacy controls to the exact way you want them to function. Again, it's up to you, I'm not going to give you a clear cut yes or no to any of these, because I really think that this is a personal choice. LinkedIn is a social network much the same as Facebook, Twitter or Google+, so ultimately the level of privacy that you have or don't have is up to you. Now you can also go over here to the left hand side, and you can find things like Communications, so you can see how often LinkedIn is going to send you emails, see whether or not LinkedIn is able to send you push notifications to devices that you have, you can also select what types of messages you're willing to receive from other members of the site.
You can select who can send you invitations to connect, and you can also turn on and off invitations to participate in research, and turn off something called partner InMail, which is just another way of LinkedIn to communicate with you. The Groups, Companies & Applications sections this is where you go through and you can select the different groups that you're a part of, you can set the frequency of the group digest emails that come through, basically that's just a rundown of the activity that happens inside of a group that you're subscribed to on LinkedIn. You can turn on or off group notifications and invitations, and you can also see things like the companies you're following, and any applications that you have added to your account.
Finally at the bottom the Account tab is where you're going to go in and manage things like advertising preferences, whether or not you see ads on LinkedIn, and what those types of ads are going to be. You can also go into the settings and change your profile and photo visibility, show and hide your profile photos from other members, manage home page content that you're hiding, select your language, manage your security settings, and then you can add and change your email address, manage your phone numbers, change your password, upgrade, request an archive, and close your account. Now we'll talk a little bit more about the archiving and closing your account a little bit later on, but I just wanted to make sure you're aware of where all of these things are.
Again, to access all of these different options that we've talked about in this movie go up here to this little icon, go down to Manage next to Privacy & Settings, and then you can go through all of these different areas of your profile and LinkedIn account to make sure that everything's nailed down in exactly the way you want it before you start using the service.
