Select a professional photo for your profile and a suitable-sized background image that represents you professionally.
- [Instructor] In this video, we'll take a look at how to add a profile picture and background image to your LinkedIn profile. First, let's take a look at how to add a profile pic. LinkedIn members who use a profile picture receive far more views than those who don't, so it's something I believe is extremely important to do. Now, in order to add a profile picture to Zachary's account, I need to click on the camera icon in the center of his profile. Once I do this, it brings up the files on my computer. Now on my desktop, I already have an image here that I want to use for his profile picture, so I'll click on that, and then click Open.
And this brings us to the Image Editor. From here, I can drag to reposition the photo, so make sure that I have it lined up and centered where I want it to be. We can also zoom in and out if we want. We can change the rotation of it, which in this case, I do not want to do. And then, on the bottom, you have the ability to adjust with some filters that you can add. You can also adjust some of the quality, such as brightness, contrast, saturation, and vignette. I want to go back to Crop though. Make sure that I have it centered the way that I'd like it to be, and when I'm happy with it, on the bottom right, I'm going to click, Apply.
This will bring us to another screen that shows us a general outline of our profile up to this point. You'll notice in here that we now have this profile picture, and if at any time, we want to change that picture or edit it, we can do so by clicking on this pencil icon. You can also see that some information is in here, such as Zachary's first and last name, his university, his headline, and more. That's because this is information that we entered in when creating the account. One that you might need to add in, if you didn't do it while creating your account is here under Industry.
For Zach, he is going into Marketing, so I'm going to click on, Marketing and Advertising, but for other sections, like the Summary and more, we'll add those in other videos, so when you're happy, you can go to the bottom and click on Save, and you'll want to do this so that you make sure it saves your profile picture. Now as you can see, that really livens up Zachary's profile because he now has this profile picture. When selecting a photograph for your account, there are a few more things you should consider. First, use a recent photograph. You want people to be able to recognize you based on this picture, which means that you'll need to update it every once in a while.
Also, consider the proper framing. Ideally, you want people to see and recognize your face. Don't be too far zoomed out, where you can see your whole body, but can't make out your face. The next thing is the quality of the picture. Don't use a picture that's blurry or pixelated. And finally, professionalism. LinkedIn is a social media platform for professional connections. You likely want to use a photograph to reflect this. Now if you've had a photo done professionally for work, you could use that. However, you can easily take your own picture using a digital camera, or a smartphone.
Just be cognizant of the framing, the lighting, the background, and how you're portrayed in the image. Next, let's take a look at how to change the background photo on your account. So on the account we're creating, you'll see that there is this standard default background here. It's the default blue background that most accounts will have, and this one works just fine, but a great way to make your account pop and stand out is to add a customized background photo, so I'm going to click on the update here. You'll see this pencil icon.
And when I do, it brings us back to that page where we can edit some of our basic information. You'll notice here, I said that if we want to change our profile picture, I can click on this pencil icon. Well we can also click on the pencil icon in the upper right corner to change that background image. It's telling us that the recommended size for this is 1,584 by 396 pixels. However, it doesn't have to be exactly this size. I'm going to go ahead and click on Edit for that, and again, it brings up the files on my computer. Now I have a file I want to use here.
It's a PNG file that says California Coast, and I'm going to go ahead and click, Open. Now, it allows you to position this, so they're showing you the size of the bar that will appear, and you can change that however you'd like, so I want to get it here where it shows some of the water. Also some of the mountains. Again, you can zoom that in, you can straighten it, add filters, or adjust some of the qualities, and when you're done, click on Apply. Now, let's take a look at what this looks like. So I really like the new look of Zach's page.
He now has a profile picture as well as a customized background. I'm going to go ahead and click Save, and we can see this reflected on his account. There you go. There is that picture. It's important to add a profile picture, as well as background photo, to really help your profile stand out. When choosing a background photo, choose an image that's clear, professional, and fits the image that you're trying to convey.
