Best practices for creating content

- Search how to change a light bulb on YouTube. Do it right now, I'll wait. Okay, well, if you really did do it, I think you probably got the same results I did, which is just a whole lot of videos. But how do we know which one will offer the best guidance in changing that light bulb? The point is, there's a lot of content out there but there's not a lot of good content. So how do you ensure the content you are creating or curating is? First, identify the why you are teaching what you are teaching. Have this clarity before moving forward and then return to it to keep you focused. To do so, rate learning objectives. Use this prompt, after this lesson, the learner will be able to. And then, share this information with your students so they can understand the goal and they can get on board with it. Second, connect with your learner. It is important to have the learners feel that this is not a one-sided experience, but a dynamic one that depends on their involvement. You can do so by asking them questions, providing opportunities for them to share with you and the rest of the group, and offer your contact information so they can reach out to you. Next, find ways to personalize the content. Telling your own stories that relate to the subject matter or calling on the learner to do so can help create a connection. And then, get your learners active in their own environments. I have a story. Years ago, I was working on an online archeology course at a university. You may be asking, how would you teach something so dependent on being present in a specific environment, virtually? Well, the answer was easy. By asking the students to get present in the world around them. We had them document artifacts they found in their backyards or on their neighborhood sidewalks, and it was really cool to see what the students came up with and their excitement levels rise when they were making discoveries in their everyday surroundings. Finally, give your learners a way to apply the instruction. Isn't it so much more rewarding and impressionable when you apply a certain learning tool or concept to your own life and see how it works, and then, adjust and modify to make it even work better? Give your learners the freedom to make these explorations and have those ah-ha moments. All these approaches are crucial to creating and curating a collection of rich and engaging learning content. It doesn't have to be super complex, only real and tangible for your learners. Think of ways you can start applying some of these and what your learners' experiences come to life.
