- Regardless of whether you have premium or basic LinkedIn account, one you resource you should definitely take advantage of is the one you're using right now, lynda.com. As you're browsing through job listings, you'll probably find that many require skills that you either don't have or need to brush up on. Lynda.com can help you get up to speed with these skills, and you can use the simple search tools found on our site to quickly find the right courses to watch. If you recall from earlier, one of the advantages of a job seeker account is the access to insights on job listings. So if you find a job you may be interested in, you can pop open the insights for the job applicants, again these are the people who have applied for this position so far, and then scroll down to the top skills area to see what other people are bringing to the table.
And of course, you can also scroll down to the job description itself to read what the employer is looking for in terms of skills. So between the insights and the job description, you should have a pretty clear picture of what expertise or competencies you should have in order to apply for this job and be able to identify gaps or weaknesses in your knowledge. For example, maybe I'm an experienced web designer, but I've been neglecting keeping up with trends in responsive web design. Whether you need to brush up on existing skills, get up to date on the latest techniques, or learn something entirely new, you can then head over to lynda.com and in the search field, type in the software or skill you want to learn about.
Some suggestions for entire courses and individual videos will pop up below, but you can also just press enter or return to see the full search results. Search results are sorted by the best match as you can see over here. And you can use the filters on the left to refine your search. For instance, you may just want to see individual videos covering this topic, or you may want to see entire courses. You can further narrow down your results by selecting the other filter terms here under these headings. For example, you might want to see just the courses that are appropriate for beginners.
And then scroll through your results. You can then click on any course to go to its page. As you probably know, you can then read through the course details to see if it's what you're looking for. And you can browse through the table of contents. You may also want to take advantage of the ability to search the transcripts of the videos. All new courses at lynda.com have transcripts provided anywhere between a few days to just a week or two after their release. This allows us to not only provide closed captioning for our members with hearing impairments, but transcripts also make it possible for you to search for specific words and terms to see if the videos in a course cover the information you're trying to learn.
So for example, I may be wondering if this course addresses how to test responsive designs on android devices. So I could type in "android" in the Search This Course field and we can see that this term appears seven times across three different videos, including one called Testing Responsive Designs. So I'll probably want to check that one out. All right, so that's how you can search lynda.com in both a broad fashion to find specific courses, as well as how to then do a search of the transcripts to make sure the course contains the information you need in order to learn the skills you are trying to gain.
He then covers such features as Insights, which show how you stack up against a company's employees and other applicants. He also explains best practices for sending InMail to people, finding companies of interest, and using tools to reach key contacts and hiring managers. Finally, put it all to work by learning how to apply for a job directly on LinkedIn. Using these tips and LinkedIn Premium Job Seeker, you can find, apply, and network your way to your next dream job.
