The role of presets

Depending upon your skill level, the concept of a preset may seem like a great idea or a terrible idea. Presets are really useful because they allow you to quickly get a look on your image. However, if you over use Stock presets or ones that are widely available at low or no costs, your photography is going to start to look a lot like other peoples. I view presets this way, as a great recipe book, I like to think that a preset is like a recipe, made by somebody who probably knows what they're doing when they cook. I can look at a preset, and come up with a good idea and if it's built correctly, I can easily step inside and start to modify it or customize it. Presets should be a jumping off point and instead of seeing them as a negative, you should see them as the opportunity to save a lot of time.
