Thinking in black and white

- So whether you're shooting in black and white, capturing, or you're editing an existing color image, it's important to start thinking in black and white. It's a deliberate shift, and in the old days, when we would swap film, it was pretty easy to do that. You were committing to a black and white workflow. So as you start looking at the world, or looking at your image, try to think in terms of what makes a black and white image great, and there's a lot of things to think about. Contrast is very important, you've lost a lot of information, so you really want to focus on what's there, highlights, shadows. Things that are really going to pop in the image, shapes, lines, textures. Elements that might be distracting could add to a black and white, silhouettes, power lines, things like that.
