Organization and naming strategies for raw files

We'll explore merging some process JPEGs I'll choose import, These are images that were merged together and we'll explore this process of merging multiple exposures to a high-dynamic range image. For now I'm just going to bring them in and you'll see some of the benefits. Let's start by first importing the HDRs. I'll choose import, and they're added. And let's place those inside of here. Let's make a new collection, I'll call it HDR. We'll go to our previous import, select 'em and drag them in. There we go. Let's make another collection, this time we'll call this RAW. We'll deselect the photos here and click create. I could target this collection, with a plus sign next to it. So now if I import it'll actually target that. Now I'm going to uncheck the box Now I'm going to uncheck the box to not import suspected duplicates to not import suspected duplicates even though I previously imported these. even though I previously imported these. I'm going to bring in a separate set I'm going to bring in a separate set so we can process these separately from the others. so we can process these separately from the others. Remember since I'm simply adding them from the drive Remember since I'm simply adding them from the drive it's not going to create more files on the disk. it's not going to create more files on the disk. Let's import that, Let's import that, there they are. there they are. Select 'em and add it to that collection. Select 'em and add it to that collection. All right, one more. All right, one more. Let's choose import, Let's choose import, go back into that folder, go back into that folder, and I've got a couple more here. and I've got a couple more here. Here's some for Ghosts, Here's some for Ghosts, import those in. import those in. Select and place into a new collection, Select and place into a new collection, I'll just choose create collection this time, I'll just choose create collection this time, include it in the creation set, there we go. include it in the creation set, there we go. We'll call that Ghosts. We'll call that Ghosts. And it looks like I have one more, And it looks like I have one more, back to import here. back to import here. And this is one that's already been merged, it's this one here. Let's bring that in and we'll place that into another set. There's a collection, call it Modify Crop. call it Modify Crop. I've got my images in and they're all organized. Let's just put that up there. And you see I've got a good organization structure. There's my modify crop, and I placed it in. Let's make sure that all the files Let's make sure that all the files are previously put in the right place. Need to grab the ghosting ones there, there they go. And I can select those just holding on shift plus the arrow, and I'll drag that in. All right, all my files are organized and we're ready to move on. Now the images are placed into collections to make it easier. I like to use collections because as you start to build things out you can get a lot of files, plus new ones are going to be created. Remember the use of collection ensures that as you merge HDR or Pano files, the new merges stay within the collection. This is a great organization strategy since it means that all of the source images, since it means that all of the source images, plus the end results stay together. Plus after you perform the merge, Plus after you perform the merge, the naming structure is going to come into place. If we go back here and take a look at one of the last panoramic files we merged, here it is. You'll notice that the file picks up some of the names. This one became P4062283-Pano. Well that happens to be the same name as the very first image. So whichever image you select first will carry over into the new naming structure. And again notice that the merged file became part of the collection. So using the collections makes it much easier So using the collections makes it much easier to keep things organized, and those collections have the benefit of being easily synced with Lightroom mobile.
