LUTs, presets, and profiles for photographers

- Hi. My name is Rich Harrington. And in this course we're going to focus on practical techniques that you can use to save time and build upon past success, when editing your photos. We're going to take at three different techniques that are useful, to really ensure that you have the best looking photographs. We're going to learn about lookup tables, presets, and camera profiles. To start things off, we'll jump into Adobe applications and walk you through many different ways of saving adjustments. These different techniques are useful under different editing circumstances, and allow you to save a correction or a style, so that you can reuse it quickly in the future. We'll then apply the same logic and take a look at many other editing applications that also offer presets. These movies can be skipped through, depending upon which software you use but the core idea here is the same; that you'll learn how to use the tools that you already use more effectively. In our third chapter, we'll start to explore a piece of technology that's very useful to both photographers and video professionals. And that's the lookup table or the LUT. These can contain information about color and tone and are very useful for things like film stock emulation, creative color adjustments, and creating consistent presets that can be easily adapted across multiple tools. In fact, a good LUT can be used in almost any software tool from most manufacturers. And we'll show you how to create lookup tables from scratch, how to modify them, and then how to implement them in many different photo editing tools. We'll then move on to a new type of technology, Adobe camera profiles. These allow you to combine adjustments plus lookup tables and many other settings that you would use in Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, or Lightroom, into an easy to use preset. There are some great ones built in that are designed simulate what traditional camera manufacturers do to their files, in camera. But you can certainly create your own. And once you understand the power of camera profiles, you'll see that they are the preset of the future. We'll also talk about DNG camera profiles, also called DCP files. These allow you to calibrate using a specific chart so your camera and lighting conditions are automatically compensated for, in popular editing tools. We'll use a ColorChecker chart and walk you through the process to make sure that you have the most accurate color in every photograph. Then, we'll also explore lens correction profiles. This is a series of technology that compensates for flaws like barrel distortion, vignetting, and chromatic aberration. You'll learn how to access these as well as how to create your own custom profiles for any lens and camera. This course has got a lot of different topics to explore. And whether you're a brand new user or very advanced, you'll find techniques that work well for you. Now because this class is building upon core knowledge, it's a good idea that you have a basic understanding with Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. But you will see all of the key information you need and you should find that you could jump right in to even the more advanced topics. Alright. Let's go ahead and get started.
