Introducing the custom print package

One of the welcome new features inside of Lightroom 3 has to do with the Print module. What it has to do with is extra flexibility in regards to our print layouts. We will be working with these photographs of my mom and dad. So let's go ahead and navigate over to the Print module and let's say that we want to print some photographs for my mom and dad here. Well, the first thing that I want to point out is that we have this Layout Style. Now currently we have selected Single Image or Contact Sheet. So in this case you can see that I can select one image and this is identical as we've seen before. All of the different options inside of our panels here.

Well, I also have another template and it has to do with multiple and here you can see that it's changed things up a little bit and what I have chosen is a User Template that I've created for the custom picture package. Now this layout style is really unique. What it allows us to do is to have a pretty freeform layout. Let me show you what I mean by that. I am going to simply click and drag some images into these cells here and as I do this, you are going to see that these will be updated with these new photographs. Again, the nice thing about this if I ever want to change it, all I need to do is simply click and drag and drop.

You can remove cells by simply clicking on them and deleting them. All right. Well what about adding cells? What I can do in regards to adding cells is I can click and drag an image onto the stage, and I'll go ahead and extend this a little bit here. Currently it is set to Rotate to Fit, and I am going to turn that off so it doesn't rotate that. So now here I have this fun photograph of my mom with her wedding veil, and then what I want to do is I want to bring in some other images down below. So I will go ahead and click and drag and bring in this image here and then perhaps another one of my mom here.

And then I will bring in one more of my dad. One of the things that you can see is that, again, it's really flexible and it gives you a lot of control over position and layout. So I am just going to reposition these images and one of the things that you are noticing with this particular layout that I've come up with is that these images overlap the background image. Well, I don't want that to happen, and it's pretty easy to change this. All that you need to do is to right- click or Ctrl+Click on top of the image and then we can send that one to the back so it's now underneath that topmost image.

Now we'll right-click this one and send that back and right-click this one and send it back. Now I'm not saying that this particular layout is amazing, but what I am trying to do is introduce you to this idea that Custom Package is really flexible. Not only that, if we scroll down to one of our panels below, we can also change the overall background color. So I'll go ahead and change that to a black background. Now if I want to change my Identity Plate here for some reason, we'll just simply double-click it. It will open up our Identity Plate Editor and here we could choose a different font or size or change the text altogether.

I will go ahead and click OK. One of the things that we can do is once we have created a layout like this, as we have been able to do before, is we can save this as a template. So I will go ahead and click on the plus icon and I am going to call this one multiple black background and hit Create. So now I have another template and when I click on these templates, you are going to see that they will start off blank with these blank cells which I can then pretty easily fill up. Again, I can choose how I want to fill these up and we'll follow that same format as we've seen before.

The nice thing about this again is that we can modify these further if we want to change the way that this layout actually works, customize it, align things a little bit better, and then move from there. Well as you can see this new layout style gives us quite a bit of flexibility. So let's take a look at how we can work with this in further detail and we'll do that in the next movie.
