Expose for the sky
- [Instructor] Expose for the sky. In this demo I'm going to explain how to get the lighting and exposure right for a silhouette. There are a few subtleties that can make or break a finished image, so it's important to get the exposure correct in camera. The very first thing to do is expose for the sky or the background of the silhouette if we're creating. We'll need to point our camera in the direction of the brightest light and adjust our camera settings for this exposure. Here's a properly exposed photo of the beach taken near sunset. The sun hasn't quite set yet and the sky is still pretty bright. Looks good, it looks pretty even on the histogram. Check out these birds that flew by while I was shooting. While my settings weren't quite right to capture the birds' movement without blur, the exposure was pretty spot on. I saw two surfers walking by and I knew if I wanted to capture them in silhouette I could easily turn down my exposure a bit. I just changed my shutter speed from one…
