- Now while photographing in the field with a macro lens, I really wanted to stress the importance of aperture selection. Your aperture selection will determine your depth of field. In this example of a flower that we took, you'll see that this image was taken at F2.8. I can look up right below my histogram and it tells me the aperture. I want to go ahead and scroll through to F4, to F5.6 and as I do this, what happens is you'll see more and more depth come throughout the flower and it's getting more detail. And as we go through, now we're at F8, F11, F16 and now F22 and look at the incredible amount of detail involved in the flower. So this is it, F22. Now I'm going to go right to 2.8. You see the difference there? Dramatic. Let's put those side by side. So ultimately with a macro lens, the most creative decision comes in the depth of field that you choose.
