Creating a gritty look for an old sailor

- In this mini project, we'll be taking a look at how we can craft or create a gritty look for this old waterman, surfer, and sailor Jack O'Neill, the man who invented the wetsuit. With this photograph what I want to do is I want to add some grit to it. So here we'll begin by converting the image to black and white. Then we'll actually mask in a little bit of darkness to an area of the photograph, and then we'll explore how we can use our HDR toning layer, and how we can change its blending mode to really finish off the look. All right, well let's begin with the background layer. Here we'll click on our Adjustment layer icon for black and white. Now with the black and white adjustment, often it's really hard to know what to do with your settings until you've brought in your HDR toning layer.
