Comparing Lightroom Classic and Lightroom

- [Instructor] Adobe offers two different Lightroom applications for your Mac or Windows computer. There's Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. The applications are pretty similar beyond just their names and this causes new users all kinds of confusion. I'm currently viewing the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app here where we can see both of the apps listed. Lightroom Classic is easily identified by the app icon with the LRC where Lightroom is simply just LR. Both Lightroom applications are included with most Creative Cloud subscriptions but using both of them together on the same computer is not recommended. It doesn't hurt to have both of them installed but if you're only going to use one of them, then there's no reason to install both. In fact, if you do, you might accidentally open the wrong application at some point. So for this course, I've only installed the Lightroom Classic application. It's important to understand the similarities and differences between the Lightroom applications so that you can make an educated decision about which one is right for you. So let's start by taking a look at the similarities. Both Lightroom applications are designed to help you organize and edit your photos. All editing is done non-destructively. In fact, the editing tools are the same in Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. The tools' organization and in some cases the tool names are slightly different but the underlying editing engine is the same in both Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. It is even possible to sync edits between Lightroom and Lightroom Classic but that's not covered here in this course. If you want to learn more about syncing Lightroom Classic with Lightroom or the cloud, I have a couple of other courses. Watch Learning the Lightroom Ecosystem or the chapter Connecting Lightroom Classic to Lightroom in the course Lightroom Classic Essential Training. The most important difference between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom is where your original master photos are stored. Lightroom Classic manages your photos on a local hard drive or even multiple hard drives and Lightroom uploads your photos to a cloud server. With Lightroom, it's not even possible to have some images in the cloud and others on a hard drive. There's some other benefits to working with Lightroom Classic as well. Lightroom Classic is the original Lightroom. It's been around 10 years longer than the newer Lightroom cloud version. And because Lightroom Classic is more mature, it has more features: printing, book layouts, and graphic-style watermarks are just a few examples of features that as of right now are only available in Lightroom Classic. All right, now that we've cleared up the differences between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom, let's jump in and learn about Lightroom Classic.
