Choosing a working drive

- When you're going to be working with panoramic photos, you're going to have a lot of data. Chances are, the files will get really big and you can have as many as 24 images open at a single time for a 360-degree panoramic photo, even more if working on a GigaPan. You don't want the drive to be a bottleneck. There's lots of drives to choose from, and I have no particular allegiance to any one brand. What I recommend is that you look for some specific features. For example, I have a drive here that's USB 2. The same manufacturer makes a USB 3 version. That change in connection type is going to add significant performance gains. Additionally, you might want to choose a drive that's RAIDed, both for protection and potentially, speed. There are lots of manufacturers that provide RAIDed drives, and a RAID 0 type drive will spread your data across multiple drives to give you better performance. Essentially, the burden is shared.
