- Alright, let's switch to manual mode and really have some fun. In manual mode, we can control the shutter speed a lot better. Look at the picture that we just shot, and we were in aperture mode, and we were only using 1/60 of a second. That's not very fast. I can use the shutter speed directly to darken the studio instead of using exposure compensation, and that will let me take control and leave me room in my speed lights to brighten and darken a lot more than just the +3 and -3 that I get in the menu otherwise. So let's get this ambient light looking good. (snap) Ok, that's nice and dark. That was at 1/200 of a second, and at f5, that's pretty nice. I'm ready to bring in the lights now, with that. Pop up the flash, go into commander mode. Remember, I wanna bring in the back light first and then bring on the front light, and the back light right now is behind that partition. It's behind that translucent screen. And we're gonna try and make it shine light through, kinda like it was…
