- As we understand ourselves and our life stories often we find that we have dueling narratives. I have a desire to change the world, I want to have a real impact on every leader in the world. At the same time I have fears that play into that. I have a fear of being rejected, 'cause I was rejected in high school and college. I lost seven elections in a row, that had a big impact on me. I'm still afraid when I walk into a classroom at Harvard Business School with a group of people in their late 20's that they're gonna reject me. How can I get to that point of self acceptance that actually I'm okay.
And I think it's really understanding those fears we have and those desires and sometimes the desires take into an extreme put you on this impostor course when the fears really get accentuated and they take you over. And cause you to do things in a normal situation you would never do. So think about what are your dueling narratives? And how do you deal with them? It's good to have them, to have the great desires but if they turn into cravings that overwhelm you that's not good.
So I think they all have to be modulated in terms of who you are in the world and can you present a real face, an authentic face, to be the real you everyday with people you're with. From close friends to work colleagues, to the general public, to your family. If you can be that same person everyday that's the essence of authenticity and the core is being self aware, of knowing who you are.
