- To get started listening at scale, there are three questions you need to answer. The first one is what information do you need to have to be able to accomplish your goals? This could be information that you need, in particular, to make decisions that are crucial to your success as a leader. Being able to listen at scale through all of these digital channels will give you so much information. But being focused on those goals and the information you need to accomplish those goals is going to be the centerpiece of your ability to listen at scale.
Because remember, you can't listen to everything. So what will you listen to and focus on? It has to be guided by your goals. The second question to answer is who are the people and the sources and the places that you will listen to in order to get that information? This is going to be a bit of a trial and error to figure out if something is going to provide you with that information. You may be listening to it awhile, and you find it to be a fantastic source, but you may also find that it's really not that helpful, or its value has diminished over time.
Being able to identify where are these sources, these people are going to be, and identifying which ones you will keep listening to is a key part, again, of listening at scale. And the third question to answer is what tools and technologies, what practices will you use, in order to help you listen at scale effectively and efficiently? This is a digital space, and simply listening to lots of different feeds is not going to get you to the place where you need to be.
So to be efficient, what are the tools like Hootsuite, what are the dashboards you will use, and what are the structures in your day that you will implement in order to make sure you are listening on a regular basis and listening at scale. Answering these three questions will help you become that digital leader that keeps listening at the foundation of everything you do in your leadership practice.
