- You know, a key to self awareness is accepting yourself for who you are, understanding your own life story, and being proud of it. Are you proud of the fact that your parents immigrated from another country? Are you proud of the fact that you didn't go to Stanford, or Wharton, or Harvard but you went to an average school but how well you've done? Are you proud of the fact you've come from a working class family? You know, these are all sources of pride. Yet many people, I find, are ashamed. Are you proud of your sexuality? Are you proud of how you come across to the world, how you look, how you appear? These are all areas that a lot of people actually are not, you know? And they don't feel good in how they interface so they are afraid to be real.
My encouragement is to really think about who you are and accept yourself for who you are and once you do that, other people accept you just like you are. In fact, they're going to love you more, believe it or not, because you're real. They don't care where you went to school. They don't care what your ethnic background is. They don't care what your religion is. They care about you. But until you can accept yourself, often you're living a facade and you're acting like an impostor and no one likes to deal with an impostor. Sometimes they have to put up with it but no one likes dealing with that.
So if you can be real, and start out with people close to you and then expand that circle of people you can be real with. And accept your own vulnerabilities and to share those with other people. Then, that's becoming very authentic as a human being and it's the first step to becoming an authentic leader.
