From the course: Charlene Li on Digital Leadership

Create Filters

- In order to listen at scale, the key is realizing that's not listening to everybody, though. And it can get very noisy, so how do you manage listening in the digital space in order to be the best leader that you can be? The key here is to listen to the most knowledgeable person about a topic or an idea that you've believe can help you achieve your goals. This is like when you are going on a trip. You're gonna ask somebody who's been someplace, or if you're trying to do finances, asking somebody who's an expert in finance. Or somebody who's a really good cook on what's a great thing to cook for an upcoming party. You'll need to find the people, the filters out there, who can help you understand everything else that's out there so that you don't have to do that work. So this is really about leveraging the people who are doing the heavy lifting for you so that you can be the best leader that you can be. So the way to do this is to listen based on the goals that are most important to you as a leader. Let me give you myself as an example. I follow about 400 people on Twitter. Now that can sound like a lot, but it's actually 400 people who over time I have come to trust because they post things on Twitter and they follow so many things that are of interest to my research and my work. So that I know I can trust them to read all of the things and find the things that I would be interested in so that I don't have to do that work. They are my filters. They are my trusted sources so that they can help me listen at scale. Now those 400 people will change. I regularly go in and decide that somebody who I used to follow isn't following the same things that I'm in now, or I may be adding a new company or a brand that I'm particularly interested in following to see what they're doing online. So this is a matter of art as well as science. It's trial and error in creating those filters that are going to help you figure out how you can listen at scale. And the key here is to make sure that you're reviewing that list on a regular basis so that you can make sure that it's still helping you achieve those goals.
