- Here's a funny truth. Humans are hard-wired to want to be liked. We enjoy being well-liked. The opposite is also quite true. We do not like to be shunned, criticized, or in general disliked. These tendencies can be difficult, and sometimes lead us to make suspect decisions. That's why parents worry so much about their children. They fear that due to social pressure, kids might make bad decisions concerning sex, drugs, bullying, and so on. Here's what many people don't realize. Adults at work are a lot like kids at school. We have people we like, those we don't, cliques, and yes, social pressures that affect decision-making.
