When to fire an employee

- The worst part of leadership is having to fire someone. It means someone failed. Let's make sure it wasn't you. And before you fire anyone, you need to make sure you've given the person clear expectations. It's not only important for morale, it's also important legally. The more clearly you can identify where someone did not meet expectations, the less headaches for you. Measuring specific behaviors can remove the gray area. For example, if regular customer communication is a behavior you measure, set a number like 15 customer calls per week. You need to make it clear these are job expectations. It's not just a nice to have. When you have clear expectations and specific standards of behavior, firing becomes a lot less personal. And when to fire becomes more clear.
