What does a facilitator do?

- A facilitator moves a meeting towards a common goal. Of course, there's more to it than that, but to understand the role of a facilitator we have to start somewhere. Facilitators make the process easier and they can facilitate anything from a large auditorium full of people, to your typically weekly team meeting. So how does a facilitator make meetings easier? She or he does so by focusing on two components, structure of the process, and interpersonal dynamics. Let's take a look at each of these. The structure of the process can make or break your meeting. We'll be covering many specific elements of structure later in the course when we speak to pre, during, and post meeting. But a few common structural elements a facilitator may handle are agenda, pre-work expectations, how we'll make decisions, and desired outcomes.
