What to do when people don’t support your next career move

- You know you're ready for the next step in your career. But what do you do when others around you, your friends, your colleagues, your family, your boss, don't seem to recognize that or support it? That's an incredibly frustrating situation and one that's unfortunately not uncommon, as I wrote about in my first book, Reinventing You. We assume the people closest to us are going to be the most supportive when we want to move up or make a shift to a new area that excites us, but often that's not the case. In fact, they might be downright hostile to the idea. They think they're being helpful, protecting us and playing devil's advocate. It's not (chuckles). In fact, it can be quite hurtful. Here is what to do to combat that negativity and take the steps you need to. First, try to understand their concerns.
