- So often when we avoid difficult conversations, it's because we use the power of imagination in an unproductive way. We imagine the other person angry or upset. We imagine losing the relationship or being judged. In short, we visualize a negative outcome. We need to use our powers of imagination to visualize a better outcome. Let's talk about how to get a more positive result through visualization and through speaking to the future. First, we need to visualize or picture that at the end of a difficult conversation, there's a positive result. Suppose you need to have a difficult performance conversation with an employee, but you've been putting it off. You've been visualizing the worst. They may quit, and you can't afford that right now, or they may cry, they might blame you or somebody else, or they might pick a fight.
