- Every year, I lead wilderness expeditions with executives and special operations soldiers. Upholding standards is always a front burner conversation between these two groups. One time, prior to climbing a mountain summit, we asked a group to meet and be ready to leave at 7:45am with their packs on and trekking poles in hand. The 13 executives and veterans gathered before the climb. As we stepped off, a special operations sergeant major flatly said, "It's 7:53, not 7:45." You could have heard a pine cone drop. He then added, "Where I come from, you're never late." Someone asked, "What if you are late?" He said, "You're not late, it does not happen. Lives depend on reliability. We never disrespect each other's time." Wow, later in the day, an executive remarked, "Too bad my company isn't like that when it comes to starting meetings on time."
