- Now I mentioned earlier on about fairness and giving out the really good jobs and the really bad jobs equally to people. But on top of this, there's the question of how you manage people, and I think it is important to vary your management style or your leadership style. There's a model I particularly like for this called situational leadership, and what you do is you look at the competence of the person for the job that you are about to give them, and you also look at their motivation for the job that you're going to give them. So you've got competence and motivation. Clearly, if somebody's competent and motivated you can delegate to them or even empower where you don't need to check on what they're doing. Probably you would delegate, which means you give them the job, but you monitor and you check occasionally that it's going okay. So if they're competent and motivated, that's easy.
