- I used to host networking events at the National Press Club. One time, we were sharing our favorite quotes. Journalist Eleanor Clift stood up and said, "My favorite quote is, "we're all in a race to be relevant." Eleanor is right. If we want to succeed, we need to make our communication relevant. And the way to make every communication relevant is to use these five steps. Step one, identify your goal in one sentence. Step two, anticipate your decision maker's cares and concerns. Step three, address their cares and concerns by saying, "You may be thinking..." Step four, use the words you're right to show you understand their cares and concerns. And step five, share the good news of how you've already addressed their cares and concerns. Want an example of how this works? The first step remember is to identify your goal in one sentence.
