- So, we've addressed some of the most common examples you'll face, but what about a few more rare special circumstances? Sometimes you're thrown a curve ball but you can be ready. Let's think about three examples that do happen on occasion. First, well, it can happen to the best of us. What if you try to start speaking but you simply draw a blank? Everyone's watching, you're reaching for words but they simply aren't there. Rule number one, don't make anything up and just fill in the air time with unfocused commentary. Believe me, saying something false or something not useful is worse than allowing just a few seconds of silence. Your next option when this happens is to empower a colleague. Very often, there is someone sitting near you or in the room who you trust to address the issue. Nobody has to know you're drawing a blank. It may very well appear that you're empowering someone else to speak, and when they do, it will very likely jar your brain into waking up. Now, you can jump in…
