- Did you know that anesthesia and antiseptics were both introduced in the mid-1800s? Anesthesia took off immediately. But antiseptics didn't. Why is that? Well, anesthesia solved a problem doctors cared about. It subdued the patient so they didn't have to take out a tooth or appendix with the person flailing around in pain or dying of shock. It was an obvious and quick win. But antiseptics also solved a huge problem. Infection was the single biggest killer of patients. But using antiseptics required a lot of work from the doctor with lots of complex steps and it took months to see the payoff. A high degree of difficulty, no immediate value, and a long horizon for success. Even though they saved more lives, antiseptics had a much slower buy-in. You don't want to be the person who's great ideas take 50 years to catch on.
